correspondent arwa damon in benghazi. also joining us david ignatius, the columnist for "the washington post." david, let me start with you. you have some information, fascinating and intriguing information that the attack on the consulate may have been linked to al qaeda operatives in libya as a revenge plot. what exactly are you hearing? >> wolf, i heard from a source who has good sources on the ground in the libyan underground that the talk there was that the attack on the u.s. consulate that killed our ambassador stevens on september 11 last week was conceived as by the people who did it, an act of revenge to retaliate for the drone attack that killed a key al qaeda operative and planner. i ran that yesterday by a u.s. intelligence official who said that although some of the elements that i'd heard did not check out that they had heard the same thing. they'd heard this talk of revenge for the killing as a motive for the attack on the consulate in benghazi. so the u.s. government has been hearing the same thing that i picked up from my source. >> that would seem to suggest, david, i'm goi

states. at the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya's second largest city, at least one american staff member was killed after gunmen stormed the compound and burned it down. we've got some amateur video here into nbc news from the scene. if you listen, you can hear gunshots going off in the background. witnesses say the attackers were armed with automatic rifles, rpgs. libyan forces stationed there said to have little to stop the violence. >>> in neighboring cairo, angry protesters scaled the fortified walls of the u.s. embassy, destroyed the american flag and replaced it with a black islamic banner. most of the u.s. diplomatic staff had already been evacuated in anticipation of this protest. both incidents reportedly are reaction to a little-known amateur movie produced in the united states which ridiculed the prophet mohammed. it gained attention because an obscure florida pastor began promoting it, the same man who triggered deadly riots in afghanistan when he threatened to burn the koran. we want to go straight to cairo where we find nbc chief foreign correspondent, richard engel.

there was no significant or sizable demonstration when the attacks unfolded sometime after 9:35 p.m. in benghazi on 9/11. in simple terms this was not an ongoing demonstration that spiraled out of control. quote, there was no protests and attacks were not spontaneous the intelligence source said. the libyan attack was planned and had nothing to do with the movie. according to fox news's official a u.s. official did not dispute the account and talked about at small demonstration this consulate as how many separated the attack in the even u.s. official could not say adding it part of the investigation. quote, while everything is still under investigation, the available information suggests that the protests in cairo inspired what the attackers decided to do later that night in benghazi. right now this points to a plan that was hatched opportunisticly on that day. while the libyan government as well was senior members of congress briefed on the attack call it terrorism and they say it was premeditated the state department spokeswoman would still not go that far. >> again i'm not going to put labels on t

of what the security was in the consulate in benghazi. whether or not it was accurate. and catherine herridge has published an article in foxnews.com where she outlined all of the attacks leading up to tuesday at that should have been red flags and meant we were beefing up our security on september 11th. >> as a panoply of attacks, june 6th an ied thrown at the perimeter of the consulate in benghazi. on the 11th the british motorcade came under attack by an rpg. on the 18th, attacked and burned the flag and on the 6, even the red cross building was struck. and building toward crescendo which led to the death of the ambassador. and this attack that ended in the death of four americans were repelled by 15 minutes none of who apparently killed. so an armed force comes to the consulate and none of the guards were killed, either means they're in ka hoots or they fled. >> alisyn: why weren't we having warning signs? it was woefully inaccurate and far below the levels you usually see at the embassies. there weren't marines, apparently four video cameras and those were supposed to be working
